Why Implement A Wellness Program?

IS WELLNESS REALLY AN ISSUE?

Now, more than ever, employee wellness needs to be at the forefront of every company’s labor strategy. Based on disturbing trends in obesity and diabetes, health and benefits costs continue to skyrocket.

The statistics are now indisputable. Employees are more stressed and less happy than ever before. The ability to afford future medical costs is now part of the common conversation. This has very direct impacts on both employers and employees alike:

  • depression rates are 10x higher than in 1960, with only 45% of employees reporting to be happy n unhappy employees stay at home an extra 1.25 days a month, or 15 extra sick days a year

  • in 2010, employers were paying 28% more for healthcare than the previous 5 years, employees were paying 40% more

  • the average company in the US now spends approx. $693 USD per employee on wellness – this increased by 20-25% from 2014-2015

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF IMPLEMENTING A WELLNESS PROGRAM?

Qualitatively, we know that corporate health and wellness programs:

HOW IS THE PROJECT ROLLED OUT?

A ‘Services and Roll-Out’ document will be provided to the company outlining the necessary steps to implement the program. Ikkuma will work with your company to provide seamless on-boarding of all your employees. After access to the tool has been granted to all the employees, Ikkuma will work with your company to provide coaching on Team Challenges.

DOES THE WHOLE COMPANY NEED TO SIGN-UP OR CAN THE COMPANY SIGN-UP THE PEOPLE THAT WANT IT?

To help ensure optimal success of a wellness program, it needs to become part of the culture. Therefore, the program should not be treated as an opt-in program. All employees need to be signed up. The benefit of ‘my superHuman Project’ lies in its multi-dimensional platform. There are habits in several different dimensions that offer a chance for all to participate. No longer will people feel alienated because they are uncomfortable or unable to participate.

CAN I INVITE FAMILY MEMBERS?

One of the unique aspects of the mySHP tool is the opportunity for you to sign-up family members to use the tool. Although your family will not be able to participate in the company organized Team Challenges, they will have access to all the functionality of the tool. This increases the chances of success immensely. Having the family take the wellness journey with you provides a significant advantage in engagement and success of the program.

DO YOU PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR ORGANIZING WORKSHOPS?

With our ‘Ikkuma Certified Partners’ designation, we are equipped to provide solutions for workshops in all of the dimensions. Working with our clients, Ikkuma will ensure that any workshops provided for clients follow the strict values that Ikkuma holds in the utmost regard.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AN EMPLOYEE LEAVES THE COMPANY?

Ikkuma will work with your payroll services company to ensure that any turnover is administered without headaches for company HR professionals. Turnover up to 5% will be covered at no cost for your company. Any turnover or increases in employee base beyond 5% will be charged on a pro-rated basis.

Tool Functionality

HOW DO I GET SET UP ON THE TOOL? AND CAN I LOGIN AT HOME?

You will be getting specific instructions on how to use the tool. You will receive an email directing you to your personal profile. Here you will choose a password and upload a picture. As the tool is web-based, you will be able to login securely from any computer.

AM I GOING TO BE RECEIVING A TON OF EMAILS?

As the tool acts as a virtual coach, you will receive a weekly email when you have an active action plan. This ‘virtual coach’ will remind you to keep up the good work. There is a button on this email that will take you to the tool to update your habits. Besides that, you’ll receive emails when you start to use the tool, in order to familiarize you with its features.

HOW DO EMPLOYEES LEVEL UP?

One of the major engagement aspects of mySHP is the ability to progress in the tool. The tool provides you with 100 levels of advancement, with habits being unlocked with every ‘level up’. When you engage with the tool, you will accumulate experience points (XPs). For activities such as logins, status updates, gratitude entries, tokens and badges, you will receive XPs. As you reach the threshold for the next level you effectively ‘Level Up’.

HOW DO YOU TRACK MOOD?

Every time you login to the tool you are asked a quick mood check, getting your present state-of-mind. This check uses a ‘self-assessment manikin’ that has been proven to provide the best estimation of your mood. You will then be able to see your mood progression over time as you use the tool. You will also be able to superimpose the progression of your dimensions vs. your mood.

DOES GAMIFICATION REALLY WORK?

Gamification is no longer for gamers alone. Video games on consoles and via mobile devices are more prevalent than ever before. People from all walks-of-life are gaming.

Games have been shown to increase the effectiveness of learning on many platforms. This is based on the level of engagement. This engagement occurs due to both the enjoyment and the competitive nature of gaming. Moreover, progressing in levels delivers hormonal boosts to the user, increasing the likelihood of continuing with the program.

Leveraging new novel technology, gaming will only become more pervasive.

DOES THE TOOL HAVE A MOBILE APP?

Yes, you will be able to access basic functions of the tool in order to quickly update Actions, Gratitude or Status.

DOES YOUR TOOL SYNC WITH WEARABLE TECH?

We will be partnering with wearable tech companies in 2016. Since there are well over 200 lifestyle habits, the necessity for wearable tech is not as critical, due to its limited functionality.

DOES THE TOOL HAVE A HRA?

No. The mySHP Assessment is not an Health Risk Assessment (HRA). mySHP is a process-oriented tool meant to improve lifestyle habits. We do not focus on your present HEALTH, we focus on your present HABITS. Through implementing the right habits, you will subsequently improve your health. Think of it as a preventative tool for a healthy life vs. a treatment for an existing health issue.

IF I’M HANDICAPPED CAN I STILL USE THE TOOL?

Indeed! While there are some habits that deal with physical fitness, the diversity of the habits provides several lifestyle habit options for people who may be handicapped. This is one of the main drivers for the 8-dimensional approach. At Ikkuma we believe that everyone should have the ability to participate in any wellness program.

Engagement

WHY WILL THIS WORK WHEN OTHER PROGRAMS FAIL?

The challenge in delivering a successful wellness program revolves around user engagement. Delivering all the important information is not the issue. Getting employees to engage with the content is the challenge.

There are several aspects of mySHP that will ensure
the highest levels of user engagement, namely:

  • the structure of the tool has been designed much like a mobile game, consisting of 100 levels. This allows the user to progress in the tool, unlocking new habits with each ‘level-up’. This creates the impetus to stay engaged and leverage all the life changing habits;

  • although the back-end of the tool is complicated, the front-end design is meant to be incredibly simple and quick to use. It is meant to teach the user as much as they would like to know about a habit;

  • Team and Individual Challenges will evolve and keep users engage and connected with fellow colleagues who use the tool;

  • there is constant progression feedback, helping motivate the user throughout their journey. The email ‘Virtual Coach’ is another tool to help keep people on track. mySHP will also provide a ‘forum’ for users to ask questions for further information;

  • the Timeline is meant to act as a wellness newsfeed. As participation in the tool grows, users will be motivated by colleagues’ achievements and progress, towards better health;

  • the Gratitude Journal directly addresses a dire need for companies to have more positive feedback in the office. With automated emails sharing Gratitude entries, this function could be an incredible lever for an improved work culture.

HOW CAN WE HELP EMPLOYEES TO ENGAGE WITH THE TOOL? (CORPORATE)

There are several aspects of the mySHP tool that foster increased engagement. From the gamification of the tool, to the Team and Individual Challenges. The tool has been designed with optimal engagement in mind. Moreover, two incredibly important aspects of employee happiness are social connectedness and gratitude. The tool provides a platform for both of these critical success factors.

Senior leadership buy-in to the tool will be critical for the program’s success. It will be very important early on for managers and seniors leadership to be the example for other employees. Leveraging the Gratitude Journal and Timeline will provide a significant boost to overall engagement.

Regardless of the existing culture, studies have shown that team performance is positively impacted by increasing the amount of positive vs. negative inputs in the workplace. Managers can begin to foster this new wave of gratitude to create a more positive workplace.

WHAT IS CONSIDERED GOOD ENGAGEMENT?

As per typical gaming engagement, interacting with the tool 3-4 times per week, for approximately 5 minutes each session is considered excellent engagement. This isn’t meant to be a time draining tool. It is meant to be a coach. Just like a coach provides direction and allows the individual to then apply what they have learned, mySHP provides the framework and guidance for your employees to improve their lifestyle.

HOW LONG IS THE PROJECT?

The project is meant to be a lifelong journey. Ascending the 100 levels should take approximately 2-3 years. Following this, there will be exciting content and rewards to provide you with other tool options beyond these 100 levels. The focus for Ikkuma is keeping you engaged and constantly improving. Other wellness programs have struggled to keep people engaged due to the typical one-dimensional and episodic nature of their programs (i.e. solely fitness and nutrition based). We have something for everyone.

Admin Functionality

HOW MUCH WORK DOES THIS CREATE FOR THE ADMIN?

The tool is meant to be self-sustaining. All analytics for the Admin are easily accessible on the Admin Dashboard in the tool. Depending on the company size, Ikkuma also provides free on-boarding for new employees if the company so chooses. All turnover and new employee additions can be managed directly between Ikkuma and your company’s payroll service provider.

DOES MY COMPANY HAVE ACCESS TO PERSONAL INFORMATION?

No. All your data will be stored off-site. Your company Admin will only have access to total company and team data. Any other analytical data for the whole company will be managed on a case-by-case basis as needed.

HOW DO TEAM CHALLENGES WORK?

The ‘EMPLOYER HANDBOOK’ has a section dedicated to Team Challenges. It gives you everything you need to know!

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE ON A TEAM?

In order to ensure your data remains confidential, the team size should not be less than 5 employees. For optimal engagement the team size should not surpass 12-15 employees. Teams sizes above this begin to compromise the individual’s impact on the overall team score.

DO EMPLOYEES NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN TEAM CHALLENGES?

This is a company decision. While complete participation is optimal, forcing employees to participate creates potential resentment of the program. Again, this entirely depends on the culture of the organization.

Ideally, working with your company, Ikkuma will create a situation where employees will WANT to participate. Another potential outcome, would be that those who do not participate see how enjoyable and empowering the Challenges can be and then choose to participate in subsequent Challenges.

HOW ARE TEAMS CREATED?

Your company will decide how teams will be created. This is entirely at the discretion of your company, but Ikkuma can help out when needed.

There are several different rationales for the types of teams created:

  • Creating teams by department can have a positive impact on team dynamics;

  • Mixing departments can have a favorable impact on employee empathy and familiarity;

  • Ensuring hierarchical ‘mixing’ will help foster better communication and empathy between employees of different levels in the organization.

Team Challenges can have an incredibly positive effect on workplace morale. Along with the Gratitude Journal, it is a recipe for company growth.

Individual Challenges are challenges you can do at any time. They are meant to be fun and engaging ways to focus on specific benefits. WE DON’T HAVE THE BUDGET FOR THIS. HOW CAN WE AFFORD TO DO IT?

Studies have shown that investing in employee wellness has a significant return-on-investment (ROI). Most studies cite a return of between $3.37 – $5 for every dollar spent on the program. Obviously the engagement and effectiveness of the program is key for its success.

The program benefits are from direct savings in health related costs, lower retention costs, increased employee productivity, and improved team performance. There now exists hard science that supports the benefits of a happy individual to an organization. This program should more than pay for itself. While budgeting for the program, the allocated budget can then be offset in a reduction of forecasted budgets in other impacted areas of the organization.
